BIO: Jim Baird is a Republican representing Indiana’s 4th congressional district. At 73 years old, he was sworn into office on Jan. 3, 2019.
Baird is both a veteran and a man of science. Before entering the military, he earned both a bachelor and master’s degree in animal science from Purdue University. In 1970, he was drafted into the Army as an infantry officer in the 523rd Transportation Company and sent to fight in Vietnam.
His unit was mainly responsible for running cargo convoys to support the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. After returning from the war, Baird was recognized with a Bronze Star with V Device and two Purple Hearts for his service. He went on to earn a doctorate degree in monogastric nutrition from the University of Kentucky before running for office.
The “Eve of Destruction” – one of the gun trucks from Baird’s Vietnam unit – is currently on display at the Transportation Museum in Ft. Eustis, Va.
